ABOUT

Dr Shaun E.C. Foo

Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Neurophysiologist · MBChB, MRCP (UK), MRCP (Neurology)

Background and Training

Dr Shaun Foo is a Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Neurophysiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Manchester and undertook specialist training in Neurology, during which he developed particular interests in electrodiagnostic medicine, peripheral nerve disorders and neuromuscular disease. He then completed further specialist training in Clinical Neurophysiology in Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire region, achieving specialist accreditation in both specialities.

This dual accreditation enables the clinical assessment and the electrodiagnostic study to be undertaken and interpreted by the same specialist - the clinical question shapes the study, and the findings are read in their clinical context.

Clinical Practice

In his substantive NHS role, Dr Foo undertakes a wide range of complex nerve conduction studies and electromyography, including the diagnosis and management of peripheral nerve disorders and injuries, neuromuscular disorders, neuromuscular junction disorders, and motor neurone disease.

His work involves close collaboration with colleagues in neurology, hand surgery, orthopaedics and spinal surgery, particularly in the assessment of complex peripheral nerve injury. He also works with specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and clinical psychologists in a wider multidisciplinary team.

Research and Development

Dr Foo is Co-Director of the Leeds Motor Neurone Disease Care Centre and site lead for the Leeds site of the national MND Register. He is a co-investigator in ongoing clinical trials, including MND-SMART, a national multi-arm platform trial in motor neurone disease, and the EMVIGORATE trial of a novel therapy in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). He is closely involved in establishing research and clinical trials at the Rob Burrow Centre for MND, with a particular focus on expanding patient access to trials and innovative treatments. Dr Foo has also authored peer-reviewed publications and presented at national and international scientific meetings.
